What Are Blue Light Therapy & IPL Facials?

Blue Light Therapy and IPL facials use light therapy to treat a variety of skin issues.

IPL facials use intense pulses of light that penetrate deep into the skin that cause blood vessels and collagen below the skin’s surface to constrict, thereby reducing redness, pigmentation issues and age lines. The entire procedure usually takes about 30 minutes and is an effective and safe way to treat rosacea, hyperpigmentation, fine lines and sun damage.

Blue light facial use similar light pulses as IPL facials but are mostly used to treat acne. For acne sufferers whose skin has become resistant to creams or pills, or for those whose skin reacts negatively to the often-harsh topical treatments.

Blue light therapy uses narrow-band blue light therapy that contains no UV light or lasers. The light kills p. Aches, the bacteria that causes acne and forms in the sebaceous cysts. It can be administered through several sessions of 30 minutes each. Most experience no pain and can go back to daily activity immediately.

How Do They Work?

Both procedures use light therapy to cause cell interruption below the dermis. IPL facials use short-wave lights at high heat that cause blood vessels to constrict, thereby reducing redness and forcing collagen production, thereby reducing wrinkles and giving the skin a plum look. The non-invasiveness of the procedure allows technicians to correct skin irregularities quickly. With regular sessions, the results become more obvious.

You will be given protective eyewear before your session and most patient liken the sensation to a rubber band snapping against the skin. The number of pulses will depend of the size of the area being treated. Redness usually goes away within a few hours but some may have slight redness of dark spots for up to a week after.

Blue light therapy is not used to treat wrinkles or pigment issues and is prescribed for current acne issues only. As with IPL, you will often have multiple sessions to ensure that the blue light kills all the acne-causing bacteria and your skin can heal properly.

You will likely require two to four weekly sessions and monthly sessions afterward are often recommended as upkeep. Most patients experience no pain, but you may experience redness or swelling for a few hours after treatment.
